Members of three area Scout troops received hands-on experience Feb. 25 as they worked toward earning their Electricity Merit Badge.
The Scouts spent the day working on several hands-on projects as they learned principles about electricity in support of Engineers Week 2023. Enamel Pin Badge
The Scouts learned how to build a switch, create parallel and series circuits and build a buzzer and an electric motor.
A highlight of the event took place as they Scouts enjoyed a lunch break. Greg Forbes, a retired Rockwell engineer, prepared hot dogs cooked on a grill made of exposed wires hooked up to an extension cord. Forbes explained to the Scouts that the hot dogs served as a conductor or resistor. At 123 volts, he said, anything that resists the flow of electricity heats up.
The Scouts are members of Troop 817, 830 and 6839 from Cedarburg and Grafton.
Henry Bray and Evan Andris begin working on their projects.
Richard Wandsnider, assistant Scout Master for Troop 836, helps Abbi Richter hook up a 6V battery to her switch.
Richard Gonzalez, assisted by Richard Wandsnider, assistant Scout Master for Troop 836, hooks up the battery to his switch.
