Picnicking in the park is going to be a lot nicer and safer this summer. Thanks to an Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Solid Waste District Competitive Funding Grant, the City of Port Clinton will install new picnic tables at Lakeview Park, Waterworks Park and West End Park.
The OSS Solid Waste District awarded the city a $7,135 grant in April 2022. The grant was used to purchase seven UltraSite, Extra Heavy Duty 6-foot Picnic Tables made from recycled plastic. The city planned to install the tables last summer, but due to supply chain issues, the tables were delivered late.
“Normally, we would have this bottled up and done early, but because of production and availability, we did not get the physical tables until November,” said City of Port Clinton Administrative Assistant Sandye Ostheimer. “They will be placed in the parks in late April or May.”
Ostheimer said the city is grateful the Solid Waste District provided the funds to replace the parks’ aging picnic tables with environmentally-friendly tables.
“The previous tables had weathered to the point they were not safe. They were warped, split and broken,” she said. “These tables are safer and larger than traditional tables.”

The first round of 2023 Solid Waste District Competitive Grant Funding closed on Jan. 31. The second round will end in June. Educational institutions, local governments and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply.
The grants fund a number of different projects, including education programs, yard waste management, recycling/waste reduction programs and the purchase of products made from recycled materials. More information on the Competitive Grants can be found at www.recycleoss.org/competitive-grant-funding.
The City of Port Clinton is committed to improving local facilities with a focus on using environmentally-friendly materials and processes. The city hopes to eventually replace all picnic tables in the city with tables made from post-consumer products.
There are no immediate plans for further improvements at city parks, but Ostheimer said city staff have a wish list that is dependent on funding.
“And we always get ideas from community members,” she said. “We want people to realize we’re always trying to find better things for our parks.”
