There are plenty of ways to mark material. Tape, paint, and markers are all very common on jobsites and shops, but engraving is a much better way to get the job done. The Ingersoll Rand 140EP targets three key characteristics in its design: productivity, comfort, and value.

Setting up the tool is simple. All we had to do was add a female-to-quick connect coupler and pop it onto our air supply line. To turn the tool on, there’s a black section of overmold covering a slide near the top of the tool that controls the valve. Pull that down and the tool is active.

The tool operates at 11,400 BPM with the tip capable of engraving a wide range of surfaces. Wood, plastic, hardened metal, and nearly everything in between are all on the menu.

Ingersoll Rand built this engraving pen to be tough. The quality of the construction promises less downtime so the tool stays in service longer. All you need to do is add a couple of drops of oil each day.

The design of the pen makes it much easier to use than a rotary tool or other engraving tools. Its thin diameter gives it more of a pen-like feel in your hand, and the overmold provides a comfortable, secure grip that you really notice during extended use. Even the small hose diameter helps you enjoy a more natural writing style.

As we were engraving metal, it was remarkable how neat our writing was compared to other engraving techniques we’ve used. We were even able to trace more intricate patterns thanks to the design. It’s no substitute for laser engraving, of course, but it’s hard to imagine a better handheld option that’s suited for the kind of environments the Ingersoll Rand 140EP is designed for.

The final piece of the puzzle is value. It’s not that the Ingersoll Rand 140EP is cheap. It’s that the quality and performance of the tool is outstanding for its price. Considering quality engraving pens can run more than $500, the sub-$300 list price on this model is very attractive, and we’ve seen it for under $200 at some retailers.

Whatever your reason for needing an engraver, the Ingersoll Rand 140EP Engraving Pen can handle the job without costing an arm and a leg. The results are excellent and the maintenance is simple, begging the question… why pay more when you don’t have to?
